We, the humankind, are on the doorstep of annihilation unless we make fundamental changes in our lifestyles, and production and consumption systems as a whole.
Medical masks entered into our lives with Covid-19 pandemic and could not even be found in the market initially. However, the system turned medical masks as well into an object of consumption by time. And now it has also become an accessory we’re using in our daily lives. They have so far been produced millions and millions with a great many of colours and designs.
I am living on an island, and as a symbol of utopia, the concept of island took me to mythological stories.
Thetis was forced to marry Peleus she didn’t love, and in her wedding, Eris, the goddess of discord, who has not been invited thereto threw a golden apple into the midst of the goddesses that was to be awarded only “to the fairest”, thereby leading to the Troy war. In her marriage, Thetis gave birth to 7 children only one of whom survived… And at the end, she returned to her homeland: seas… This is the summary of my source of inspiration in this video work.

Covid-19 pandemisiyle hayatımıza giren tıbbi maskeler başlarda bulunamıyordu. Bununla beraber, sistem tıbbi maskeleri de zamanla bir tüketim objesine dönüştürdü. Ve şimdi günlük hayatımızda kullandığımız bir aksesuara dönüştü bile. Şu ana kadar pek çok farklı renk ve desende milyonlarcası üretildi.
Bir adada yaşıyorum ve bir ütopya simgesi olan ada konsepti beni mitolojik öykülere götürdü…
Thetis, sevmediği Peleus ile evlenmeye zorlandı ve düğün töreninde, törene davet edilmeyen Eris tanrıçaların ortasına bir altın elma fırlatarak elmanın “en güzel tanrıçaya” verilmesini istedi ve bu da Truva savaşına sebep oldu. Thetis evliliği boyunca 7 çocuk doğurdu, fakat sadece bir tanesi yaşadı. Sonunda, geldiği yere dönmeye karar verdi: denizlere. Bu video çalışmamda ilham kaynağım işte bunlardı…
